Sjaak Langenberg is an artist and essayist. He works together with designer Rosé de Beer on projects that take place mostly outside of the usual art context. Depending on the plan developed for a particular location, they choose the most suitable medium required to give form to their idea. They appeal for this same open-mindedness from the public when they confront them with their work. With a mixture of realism, absurdity and humour they continually try to expand the boundaries concerning the function and meaning of art and public space. A reversal of perspectives and the linking together of apparently conflicting worlds are important strategies within the work of Langenberg and De Beer. They always target the painful spots and try to incite people to take on a different role. With their work they respond to issues that are current within the discourses surrounding, among other things, environmental planning, social relationships, identity abuse and falsification of history in architecture and city development. What the projects have in common is that they move outside the boundaries of the location where they are implemented. The artists use diverse mediums and podiums in order to communicate their plan to a more extended audience rather than only those directly involved. That their projects are discussed in news programmes and in trade journals concerned with agriculture or shipping, for example, is a direct consequence of this pursuit of societal infiltration.
